When creative couple Janet and Andrew Mogridge purchased their former farmhouse on the edge of a Lincolnshire village, they were determined to restore some of the character they felt had been stripped away over the years. “Although the house was in excellent repair, there was work to do, especially on the kitchen and living space,” says Janet whose passion for cooking and gardening helped shape the look and feel of the interior.

The couple enlisted the help of Lyn Venables, a local designer with a special interest in textiles to help bring their ideas together – a decision they say has been pivotal to the success of the project. ‘Andrew and I have both had equal input into the creative process so Lyn’s ‘casting vote’ has been invaluable and it has been so helpful to have an experienced eye to guide us in how much better the space could work for us.”

In an unusual move, the couple have replaced a wall and created two smaller sitting rooms from one large open space, installing stripped pine doors, oak flooring and a log burner in each. In the kitchen some of the wall mounted cabinetry was removed along with a large island which was replaced with a much more interesting customised antique cupboard. “Now the space is more clearly defined, giving us a much better flow between cooking, dining and relaxing.”

As an antidote to their busy lives, the couple have used understated colours and natural materials to create a light, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of beautiful, textured fabrics, stylish lighting and well-chosen furniture. The house now has all the room they need for entertaining and to accommodate their three children as they come and go from university.

Janet is delighted with how the renovation has turned out, “One of the things we love about the house is the way it lends itself equally well to being full of family and friends or a peaceful refuge for Andrew and I.  In either situation, we are very happy enjoying the home we have created.”
